A heat pump is the same machine running in two directions. In summer it moves heat out of the house. In winter it moves heat in from the outdoor air, with backup heat for the coldest hours.
The outdoor unit, the indoor coil or air handler and the controls must form a matched system. An outdoor unit alone is not a complete replacement decision.
