Understanding A/C Installation

Central air conditioning moves heat from the home to the outdoors through a refrigerant circuit. The indoor coil, outdoor unit and airflow must work together as a matched system.

What a Proper Installation Includes

An A/C installation includes equipment sizing, refrigerant piping checks, airflow checks and startup testing. We first assess whether the existing air conditioner can be repaired.

Oversizing is a sizing mistake that can affect comfort and cycling. A system that's too large drops the air temperature and satisfies the thermostat before it has pulled the humidity out. The house can feel cold and clammy, and short cycling can increase equipment wear. Sizing comes from a load calculation on the house in front of us, not from what was there before.

What This Covers

  • A load calculation based on your house: square footage, insulation, windows, orientation, and duct condition
  • Sizing assessment of the existing system and the proposed replacement
  • Duct and airflow assessment before the equipment is chosen, because the ducts have to carry what the system delivers
  • Line set condition, size and refrigerant compatibility checked against the selected equipment instructions
  • Manufacturer-required filtration, nitrogen during brazing where used, and evacuation and leak testing before charging
  • Refrigerant charge set and verified using the selected equipment instructions and required test conditions
  • New equipment pad and condensate management as the installation requires
  • Permits pulled and inspection handled where the work requires it
  • Startup test readings taken and written down, and left with you
  • A walkthrough of the system, the thermostat, and the filter you'll need

When to Compare Repair and Replacement

  • A failed compressor on a system already well into its service life
  • A leaking evaporator or condenser coil where the repair approaches the value of the equipment
  • Repeated failures across different components in the same season
  • A system using a refrigerant that's no longer practical to service
  • Cooling that never worked correctly since installation and needs its sizing, airflow and setup assessed
  • You're planning renovations that will change the load on the house anyway

How an Installation Runs

  1. We confirm replacement is the right answer

If the system can be repaired sensibly, we say so. A replacement quote should follow a real diagnosis, not stand in for one.

  2. We calculate the load and look at the ducts

Sizing comes from the house. We also look at whether the duct system can carry the airflow, because installing a larger system onto restrictive ducts makes things worse.

  3. You get the whole scope in writing before anything starts

The written scope identifies the equipment, related replacement work, permit requirements and expected sequence before the existing system is removed.

  4. We install, test at startup, and hand you the numbers

We record the vacuum, refrigerant charge, airflow and temperature readings taken during startup checks. You receive the record for future service reference.

Repair or Replacement?

Decide from the equipment findings
FindingWhat We Discuss
A serviceable fault in otherwise sound equipmentThe repair, parts requirements and expected result.
A major component failureRepair options, any applicable manufacturer coverage and replacement options.
Repeated faults or poor comfortThe cause, equipment condition and whether replacement would address it.

For an A/C replacement, we compare the existing fault, equipment condition and compatibility of the proposed system.

Equipment Options

We install Daikin, Goodman, Ruud, Carrier and Bryant equipment. The selection depends on the home, compatibility and installation requirements.

Questions About A/C Installation

A load calculation considers the house, insulation, windows and other heat gains. We also assess the existing airflow. Floor area or the size of the old unit alone does not establish the right replacement.

Sometimes, if the indoor coil, refrigerant, controls and airflow form an approved equipment match. We check compatibility before quoting. An outdoor unit alone is not a complete sizing or matching decision.

An inverter controls compressor speed so the system can vary its output. It still needs correct sizing, compatible components and startup testing. We discuss inverter and side-discharge options where they suit the home.

Yes. Ductless equipment can condition rooms without a central duct system. We assess the rooms, equipment locations, refrigerant lines, power and drainage before writing the scope. We do not offer duct repair or sealing.

Related Services and Technical Reference

For a room or addition with no ductwork, a ductless mini-split cools and heats that space without extending the central system.

Equipment-specific procedures follow the manufacturer instructions.
