What Happens on an HVAC Service Call

A service call is a paid diagnostic visit, not a sales visit. We tell you the diagnostic fee before we come out, we test the system until we find the actual fault, and you get a written price before anyone touches a part.

The Short Answer

A Service Call Is a Paid Diagnostic Visit

A technician tests the system, finds the fault that is actually causing the problem, and gives you a written price to fix it before any work begins. You hear the diagnostic fee on the phone before we schedule, and it does not change once we are at the house.

1
A clear figure, heard before we come out
2
Readings taken before parts come off
3
Written price before any work starts
4
Nothing happens until you say go
The Straight Answer

Why the First Visit Is Paid

The diagnosis is the work. A technician spends the time to find what is actually wrong, and that answer belongs to you whether or not you hire us for the repair.

A price given over the phone is a guess, and a guess has to be padded to be safe. That padding is what a homeowner pays for when a company quotes blind. We would rather charge for the diagnosis, find the real fault, and price the actual repair.

You hear the fee before anything goes on the calendar, and it does not change once we are at the house, and nobody arrives with a number you have not already agreed to. There is no mystery charge at the end of the visit.

We know that is not how most companies around here work, and it is not what every homeowner is looking for. If you would rather have somebody come out at no charge and give you a figure on the spot, there are companies nearby who do that well. We would rather tell you now than take up your afternoon.

Straight Talk

Why We Will Not Price It Over the Phone

Two systems can behave exactly the same way for six different reasons. A unit blowing warm air could be any one of these, and they are nowhere near each other in cost or in work.

Low on charge

A leak somewhere in the sealed system. Finding the leak is the job, not topping it up.

Failed capacitor

A small part that stops the compressor starting. Common, and the reason a diagnosis matters: the symptom looks like a dead system.

Contactor not pulling in

The outdoor unit never gets the command to run, so nothing happens when the thermostat calls.

Blocked coil or airflow

The system is working and the air still is not cold, because the heat has nowhere to go.

Control board

The board stopped commanding the compressor. The system looks alive and does nothing useful.

Thermostat or wiring

Sometimes the equipment is fine and the signal never reaches it. Worth ruling out first.

A number given over the phone is a guess, and a guess has to be padded to be safe. That padding is what a homeowner pays for when a company quotes blind. We would rather charge for the diagnosis, find the real fault, and price the actual repair.

The Visit

What Happens, Step by Step

1
You hear the fee before we come out. When you call, you get the diagnostic fee for your trade before we put anything on the calendar. Nobody arrives at your door with a number you have not heard.
2
We ask what changed and when. A system that stopped overnight and a system that has been weakening for three weeks are two different problems. The history narrows it before a panel comes off.
3
We take readings before we take parts off. Electrical readings, pressures, temperature split across the coil, static pressure where airflow is suspect. The readings identify the fault. Guessing is what makes a repair expensive.
4
You get the fault in plain language and a written price. You hear what failed, what the repair involves, and whether anything else is close to going. Nothing happens until you say go.
5
We verify it, not just start it. After the repair we run the system and confirm it is performing, not merely running. If we cannot get it right, we say so rather than leaving you to discover it in a week.
Our Bias

We Repair Before We Replace

When a service call is a repair, a repair is what we quote. A replacement gets recommended when the numbers say so: the cost of the fix against the age and condition of the equipment, and whether the same failure is likely again next season. You get both options in writing when both options are real.

If you are holding a replacement quote from another company and it does not sit right, that is a different visit. See our second opinion on an HVAC quote.

After the Work

What Is Covered

Parts

We give you the model and the serial so you can register it and hold us to it.

Where we stop

We do not do duct work. If the fault is in the ductwork we will say so and tell you what kind of contractor to call. Equipment age matters and we tell you plainly where yours stands.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a diagnostic fee, and you hear the figure on the phone before we schedule the visit. It does not change once we are at the house. Call (301) 395-3831 and ask, and you will have it in under a minute.
Most diagnostics run under an hour. A common repair, a capacitor, a contactor, a thermostat, a condensate issue, is usually finished in the same visit. A repair that needs a part we do not carry means a second visit, and we tell you that before we leave rather than after.
It depends on what failed, what the repair costs against the value of the equipment, and how old the system is. A ten year old unit with a failed capacitor is worth repairing. A system with a failed compressor and an obsolete refrigerant usually is not. We give you the readings and both numbers and you decide.
The diagnostic fee pays for the diagnosis, which is the work of finding the fault. It is quoted and charged separately from the repair, and you will see both on the written price before you approve anything.
We are here every day, including Saturday.
Bring it. A second opinion on a quote is its own visit, and it is one of the reasons people call us for the first time. We read the quote, test the system ourselves, and tell you whether the diagnosis holds.
